Hofburg and Sisi Museum guided tour review

Guided tour review

My verdict: the better route, the smaller price, and a walk I rate for people who want the palace in its city context. You start at Albertinaplatz rather than at the palace door, walk through the old town past the Augustinian Church and the Lipizzaner stables, and finish in the Volksgarten. What you give up against the flagship is the direct start at the Michaelerkuppel and two of the five language options. What you gain is Vienna on the way in.

What the tour actually is

A two-hour guided walk that treats the Hofburg as the destination, not the whole story. You meet at Albertinaplatz — look for the green umbrella by the fountain — and walk via the Albertina and the old town to the palace, passing the Augustinian Church, where Habsburg weddings were held, and the Lipizzaner stables from outside. Entry to the Hofburg and the Sisi Museum is included, and the tour ends in the Volksgarten. Everyone gets an earpiece headset, so you hear the guide without huddling. Languages are English, Spanish and German; there’s no refund if you miss the start.

How it compares to the €52 flagship tour is laid out on the guided tours page; the short version is that this one walks you through more of the city and the flagship spends more time around the palace itself, with skip-the-line entry at the door.

What booked travellers say

Zachary (US) wrote that his guide Siri “brought the history to life”; Alejandro (UY) said his guide “knew the history of Hofburg perfectly”. Enrico (IT) liked that his guide Raffa ran the tour with “seriousness but also levity”, and Indira (ES) reported that “the 2 hours flew by”. The headsets get their own praise: Patricia (DE) called the tour “concise but informative” with “headsets very comfortable”, and Petrus (NL) mentioned the earpiece devices as well. Regina (AT) had a guide named, genuinely, Franz Josef.

Worth knowing

  • No skip-the-line advantage at a separate gate — the start is a walk away at Albertinaplatz

  • No refund for latecomers
  • Two hours of walking, most of it on your feet

Insider tip

The start point is a 7–8 minute walk from Stephansplatz (U1/U3) along the Graben and Kohlmarkt takes you to the palace — but for Albertinaplatz, check your confirmation and give yourself a margin. There’s no refund if you miss the green umbrella.

Who should book it, who shouldn’t

Book it if you like your palaces approached on foot with the city as preamble, or if you want a guided Sisi Museum visit for the lowest price going. Choose the flagship tour instead if skip-the-line entry in peak season is the point, or if you need French or Italian. If two hours on foot doesn’t appeal at all, the entry tickets let you set your own pace. How long to allow overall is on how long do you need.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the €52 skip-the-line tour?

This one starts at Albertinaplatz and walks through the old town before reaching the palace, ends in the Volksgarten, and costs €48. The flagship starts at Michaelerplatz with skip-the-line entry and spends its 2 to 2.5 hours on the palace, museum and gardens. The side-by-side is on the guided tours page.

Where exactly does it start?

Albertinaplatz, at the green umbrella by the fountain. Give yourself a margin — there’s no refund for latecomers. Directions to the area are on getting to the Hofburg.

Do you go inside the Spanish Riding School?

No — the tour passes the Lipizzaner stables from outside. Watching the horses work means a separate €17 morning-exercise ticket, reviewed here.

Is the Sisi Museum entry included?

Yes, Hofburg and Sisi Museum entry is part of the ticket — the museum holds more than 300 personal items of Empress Elisabeth, and the Imperial Apartments run to roughly 24 rooms.
